What is Furikake?

The word comes from furi kakeru = to sprinkle over. Unlike "normal" spice blends, it contains not only spices but also rather unusual ingredients such as ground fish, seaweed, and additional crunchy elements. Furikake spice blends are often very colorful and vibrant.

What is Furikake made of?

There are many different Furikake spice blends. Usually, all contain roasted sesame, fish, spices, and granules for the crunchy effect, like our Furikake Wasabi and Ume. Furikake sesame with Wasabi, Ume, or Yuzu contains no fish; their crunchiness comes solely from the sesame. Arare rice crackers are actually a crispy mini rice snack but can be used similarly.

    Where does Furikake come from?

The predecessor was offered in Japan as a health product. The pharmacist Sueyoshi Yoshimaru wanted to contribute to better health care more than 100 years ago during a time of food shortage in Japan. The population suffered from a calcium deficiency. Yoshimaru developed a mixture of ground fish bones, roasted sesame, poppy seeds, and seaweed, which was to be sprinkled over rice. He called the product "Gohan no Tomo" - "A friend for the rice." In 1959, the term "Furikake" became established. Since then, many new products with various ingredients have been developed under this name. They are mostly used in Japanese cuisine as rice seasoning.

      How is it made?

Similar to 100 years ago, raw materials are crushed, mixed with spices, completely dried, and processed with other ingredients into flakes.

What do the Japanese use Furikake for?

In Japan, Furikake is especially used as a seasoning for rice. It gives the rice a crunchy texture, seasons it, and adds umami.
